Creative or Targeting: Which Matters More

It's an old debate and the answer has changed. Today one variable many people neglect carries more weight.

For years audience selection was the centre of the craft: interest overlaps, lists, ever-narrower segments. Distribution systems have changed, and with them the place where the work pays off.

What the system now does on its own

Finding the right people inside a broad audience has become the platform's job, using signals no advertiser can reconstruct. Narrowing too far by hand often makes results worse, because it removes the room that mechanism needs.

What remains with the advertiser

The message and what people see. It's the main signal the platform uses to decide who to show the ad to: a creative that speaks to a specific audience selects that audience better than any manual setting.

Where to spend the time

  • Several versions of the same idea, not minor variations of the same image.
  • An opening that declares who it's for: everyone else scrolls on, and that's correct.
  • Different formats, because the same idea performs differently vertically and horizontally.
  • Regular renewal: even the best creative wears out on an audience that has already seen it.

Where targeting still counts

Geography, excluding existing customers, and lists of contacts you already hold. These are things the platform can't infer and that remain the job of whoever knows the business.

Creative isn't the decoration on a campaign: it has become the main way of choosing who will see it.
