Product Pages: The Problem With Identical Text
Manufacturer descriptions used by every reseller: why they don't rank and what to do without rewriting everything.
Resellers receive descriptions from the manufacturer and publish them as they are. So does every other reseller. The result is a page identical to dozens of others, with no reason to be preferred.
Why it's a concrete problem
Among substantially identical pages the engine shows one and ignores the rest. It isn't a penalty: it's a decision not to show the same text ten times. Whoever has more authority wins, and for a small reseller that race is lost from the start.
What to add, in order of return
- Your own photographs of the real product, not the catalogue images.
- Two lines on who it suits and who it doesn't: information the manufacturer never gives.
- The questions actually received about that product, with the answers.
- Measurements, compatibility and practical details the seller knows and the catalogue omits.
Where to start when there are thousands of products
Not with all of them. With the twenty that generate most of the revenue and the ones that attract the most questions. The rest can stay as they are: superficial work everywhere returns less than proper work on a few.
The sign that it's working
The page starts receiving visits from searches containing details, not just the product name. Those are searches by people who have decided what they want and are looking for whoever explains it best.
A product page identical to twenty other shops' has no reason to be shown instead of theirs.
