When Engagement Doesn't Bring Clients
High interaction numbers and no enquiries: it happens more often than people admit. The causes, and how to check them.
It's one of the most frustrating situations: the content travels, comments arrive, the numbers are the ones everyone likes to show, and no enquiries come in. It isn't a paradox, it's a mismatch between what attracts and what sells.
The most frequent cause
The content that gets the most interaction is often the least specific. Generic advice appeals to everyone, so it circulates, and it mostly reaches people who will never buy. Technical content appeals to few, circulates less, but reaches the people with the problem.
How to check it concretely
- Look at who comments: potential clients, or peers in the industry?
- Compare your most-viewed posts with those that produced direct messages: they often don't match.
- Check whether enquiries follow a post or a private conversation.
- Make sure the profile states plainly what you do and how to ask for a quote.
The step that's almost always missing
Between the content and the enquiry there needs to be a stated intermediate step: a page to visit, a question to ask, a document to request. Many profiles stop before that, assuming interested people will come forward on their own.
What to accept
That the content bringing clients will have lower numbers than the rest. That's normal and it isn't a fault to correct: they are two different objectives and they should be measured separately.
Content that appeals to everyone reaches almost only people who don't buy. That isn't a platform flaw: it's what you chose to say.
