Measuring Campaigns When Tracking Is No Longer Enough
The data platforms return is incomplete and will stay that way. How to decide anyway.
Between refused consent, browser restrictions and system limits, a share of results is attributed to no campaign at all. This is a stable condition, not a temporary problem: it's worth equipping yourself to decide regardless.
The first tool is asking directly
An optional field on the contact form asking how someone found you collects information no measurement system recovers. The answers are imprecise, but they point in directions platform data doesn't show.
The before-and-after comparison
If switching a campaign on raises total enquiries and switching it off lowers them, that campaign is working even if its dashboard shows few attributed results. It's a crude measure and often the most reliable one available.
What to watch beyond attribution
- Total enquiries from all sources, month on month.
- Searches for the business name: they rise when advertising is doing its job.
- Direct traffic to the site, which captures people who saw something and returned later.
- The share of enquiries that say they already knew of you.
What to avoid
Optimising only on what can be measured precisely. That road leads to shifting the whole budget onto campaigns that intercept people already searching, and giving up on being discovered by those who don't yet know they have the problem.
Optimise only for what you can measure and you end up paying for the sales you'd have made anyway.
